Computers have become one of the basic necessities of our life. Computers were developed as a simple computing device. Initially computations were generally carried out manually. But today we can’t even expect our lives without computers. With such an amassing usage of computers there occurred an expansion of its scope and the introduction of newer technologies. One of such innovations was the development of networking technologies. The computer networking in simple language means connection of two or more computers with the use of networking components. Broadly speaking there are three types of networking-

Local area network (LAN):

It is the connection of computers within a small area like an office or a building.

Metropolitan area network (MAN)

It the Computer Network operative in medium area coverage say a town or a city.

Wide area network (WAN)

It corresponds to wider area networking like across countries and around the globe.

Computer Networking is a very broad concept including the computer connectivity and the resource sharing. The Computer Network components include a wide range of components like the individual computers, servers, hubs, switch, bridges, routers, modems, network interface card, and cabling and wireless access points. Individual computers are just operating systems on which we all work. Servers are the connecting devices that shares and store information in the network. A hub is a broadcasting device that transmits information. Network Interface Cards provide connectivity among the various computers in a network.
